Tri Nations Springboks

The 2009 tri nations series was the fourteenth annual tri nations rugby union series between the national rugby union teams of new zealand australia and south africa respectively nicknamed the all blacks wallabies and springboks.

The springboks withdrawal will cut the rugby championship from 12 to six matches which still will go ahead over a six week period with each team having at least two byes. In 2007 the tri nations was shortened to two games against either team because it clashed with the rugby world cup in france. The springboks secured the season crown in their final match on 12 september defeating the defending series champion all blacks 3229 in hamilton.

The tri nations will take place in october november. For the second straight year the tri nations was the international coming out party for a young springboks star. As the series shifted to south africa the boks needed to beat the all blacks in order to keep their hopes of a tri nations title a first since 1998 alive. In 2006 new zealand retained the trophy with 2 games still to be played.

It is a blow ahead of the tournament and means the tri nations returns eight years after. The 2020 rugby championship has been replaced by a tri nations series after south africa announced it wouldnt be travelling to australia. The springboks absence leaves australia new zealand and argentina to challenge for this years title. Due to several factors including south african government travel restrictions player welfare and safety concerns and the ongoing effect of the covid 19 pandemic on south african players both in south africa and across their various clubs in the uk and europe the springboks will remain in south africa.

The springboks emerged as winners due to their superior table points. South africas shock withdrawal from the 2020 rugby championship has been confirmed with organisers sanzaar scrambling to announce an old school tri nations competition in its place. In 2004 schalk burger jean de villiers and marius joubert emerged as major stars with burger going on to be named the irb world player of the year.
